You’ve probably heard this term being thrown around quite a lot in the health and wellness space, but what does it actually mean and how does it help us understand herbalism?
Inflammation is a natural process in your body, and that can be a good thing! When you twist your ankle or bump your knee, plasma and leukocytes rush to the injured area to help it heal, causing swelling and pain. This is known as acute inflammation. But if inflammation in the body continues for too long, it can become chronic inflammation and can disrupt the natural healing processes in the body.
If a plant medicine is described as “anti-inflammatory”, it means that it helps calm the inflammation in your body. Depending on the herb, it can calm acute and/or chronic inflammation.
